Welcome to Week 3 of the Sew Along. Did you miss out on week 1 and 2? Visit them here:
Week 1 – Learning about the pattern and acquiring materials
Week 2 – Planning Fabric, Cutting, and Staying Organized
This week, we will re-organize our HSTs squares and pair them up to make 2-at-a-time HSTs. I recommend pairing up the HSTs in their groups, and stacking them at angles as shown in the video, to keep the pairs together.

When I made all the HSTs, I kept all the squares and half square triangles batched into groups which means I repeated the method for each group at a time. That’s me playing it safe just to make sure I could keep track of every single piece. I would think that it is possible to put all the Half square triangles together and batch make them all into one big pile but I think there might be a little extra work on the back end of putting them back together into these groups. The benefit I see in making them in smaller batches like this is that it’s really easy to step away and take a break because you’ll know exactly where you’re at in the process and it’s easy to pick back pick up where you left off. My band rows are still here, and all my half square triangles are grouped and labeled and all I really need to do is follow the pattern and make the layout to put the quilt top together.
If you’ve never made 2-at-a-time HSTs before, check out this video, it will walk you through making and trimming them. Remember to return the HSTs back to their groupings so that they are ready for quilt layout next week.
